this fish is called a singular bannerfish. my guess is because of its single band of yellow on its fin. it popped up several times on the google image search for ’singular.’
beyonce’s ’single ladies’ video popped up several times as well for the google image search for ’singular’.

theory of singularity- In mathematics, singularity theory is the study of the failure of manifold structure. A loop of string can serve as an example of a one-dimensional manifold, if one neglects its width. What is meant by a singularity can be seen by dropping it on the floor. Probably there will appear a number of double points, at which the string crosses itself in an approximate ‘X’ shape. These are the simplest kinds of singularity. Perhaps the string will also touch itself, coming into contact with itself without crossing, like an underlined ‘U‘. This is another kind of singularity. Unlike the double point, it is not stable, in the sense that a small push will lift the bottom of the ‘U’ away from the ‘underline’.

interpretations: when i see the definition of the word singular, i begin to think of the uniqueness aspect of the definition. it’s different from my original understanding of the word. i had always just taken it to mean one or single. then i began to think about how the theory of singularity is so close to the word singular. it’s a mathematical term that addresses the failures in a manifold structure. to me that means the three dimensional aspects of a two- dimensional or incomplete model of something. it illustrates the idea with a string being dropped on the floor. in reality it will most likely fold over on itself, touch itself, twist, or come close to itself like in an underline ‘u‘ shape, without touching.
the idea of singularity struck me as having to do with a uniqueness or something that is unlike anything else. i wanted to identify with that, and not in the sense that everyone is special, because in terms of singularity, no one is special. i think of things that are extraordinary and how there can be more than one singular thing. there is nothing like the pyramids, but there are more wonders of the world than that. there is no other planet like earth that we know of, but earth is still just another planet. singularity is relative.
singularity comes from being among the profane, or common. singularity is one of those words that is definitely characterized by what it is not. something that is singular can be among the ordinary, but it is not one of them. something singular is hard to find. and that’s because of its singularity. it’s rare, and not in the everyday view. otherwise it would not be singular. we can look at singular on so many different levels. we could say that nothing is singular, because there is always something like it, but on the other hand, everything is singular, because nothing is exactly the same. they are always different, if nothing else, than because of its existence. nothing can exist the same as another thing, be it in physical location, the subatomic particles that make it up, etc. they can seem to be the same, but they are still different simply because they are not the original.
in terms of the line, i know of a lot of things that are singular. i think of the line itself, there is only one line that i’m exploring, it is one mile long, it is in one location, all the trees are singular because of the aforementioned theory, but then again, none of them are singular because they are all trees. the same can be said about the leaves, rocks, sticks, dirt, etc. found on the line.
question for further exploration: how is singular apparent in nature? is there any real singularity in the line?
